Subject Philosophy: English

We teach English with passion and outstanding subject knowledge. We create opportunities for our students to learn new skills by giving them a variety of contexts to practise and apply them to. We teach with the intent to fulfil the following:

• A strong understanding of the curriculum expectations and the ability to apply these skills to different contexts.
• Instil a love for reading including reading for information and the enjoyment of both modern, classic literature, and poetry.
• Encourage enjoyment and pleasure in communicating ideas and emotions through a variety of different media.
• Equip pupils with essential written and verbal communication skills and competencies for everyday life.
• Encourage students to initiate their own learning and to complete tasks independently and confidently.
• Instil the idea of a clear bridge between reading, writing, and oracy so children understand and apply their knowledge of all three.

Our English curriculum supports and supplements the delivery of the National Curriculum and provides:

• Bespoke, theme-based learning experiences.
• Exposure to high-quality literature.
• Purposeful, well-planned learning ‘journeys’.
• Opportunities to communicate in different ways including written and verbal communication.
• Broad and balanced coverage of a range of subjects.
• Opportunities to respond to the needs and interests of our students and the local community.
• An awareness of local, national, and global issues.
