Subject Philosophy: Financial Education

Vision Statement

At the heart of our finance education programme for children at Queen’s Park lies the commitment to empower young learners with a comprehensive understanding of money. We aspire to cultivate informed choices, enabling children to grasp the fundamental concept of money and its various applications in everyday life.

Our curriculum will place a strong emphasis on understanding budgeting, equipping children with the skills to manage their resources effectively and resist peer pressure that may lead to impulsive financial decisions.

We aim to break down the barriers surrounding the concept of money, fostering an environment where children can explore its implications safely and confidently. Through engaging lessons, we will raise awareness of the potential negative impacts of poor financial decision-making, including the dangers of debt and loan sharks.

Our focus is not only on knowledge acquisition but also on building essential life skills that will prepare children for adulthood. By providing the building blocks for financial literacy, we strive to instil a sense of security and confidence in their financial future. Ultimately, our vision is to nurture financially savvy individuals who are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of adult life, making informed decisions that positively impact their well-being and that of their communities.

An Overview of Financial Education at Queen’s Park

At Queen’s Park, we are embarking on a journey to become a Centre of Excellence with a focus on Financial Education, supported by the charity, Young Enterprise. This project will enhance the PSHE curriculum for our children by developing the children’s:

  • Knowledge: understanding money, financial services and products to make informed choices
  • Skills: thinking ahead about financial needs, learning to plan and budget and match to actual spending
  • Attitudes: taking responsibility for financial decisions

Who is involved?

Our PSHE Lead is our designated Finance Champion and will be leading the way on this part of the curriculum, working with staff and our link with Young Enterprise, Rachel Bailey.

We have Money Ambassadors from our Year 6 children who will not only be a focus group, but they will also work closely alongside our Finance Champion to help grow, develop and personalise our Finance Education offering for the children of Queen’s Park. This will include:

  • Organising fundraising days
  • Actively contributing to the school website on our ‘Finance Education’ tab
  • Other collaborative activities

Please be sure to check back regularly for updates on either our School Newsletter or on the ‘Finance Education’ page of our website.
