Subject Philosophy: Music

Music is a universal language which provides children with a creative outlet to not only express themselves but also to value and appreciate the creativity of others. It plays an important part in our day-to-day lives, whether in the form of religious prayer and reflection or as a way of celebrating special events and achievements with friends and family. Our intention is that when children leave Queen’s Park, they do so with an active appreciation and sensitivity to Music, which then grows and develops into a life-long love of music.

We want the children of Queen’s Park to be engaged in all aspects of Music, starting with listening and appreciating the works of other musicians, to building up the skills they will need to compose music themselves. Additionally, we aim for children to become confident speakers of music, using the vocabulary they have learned fluently and with ease to articulate themselves clearly to others.

At Queen’s Park, we provide a broad and balanced Music curriculum that offers exposure to a variety of music genres from around the world and across generations. This ensures our children become confident performers, composers, and listeners. They will:

• Respect and be considerate of music from different cultures and generations.
• Develop creativity and technical skills applicable to other areas of the wider curriculum.
• Grow in experimental confidence as they work together to create original pieces of music.

In addition to this, our curriculum promotes the development of transferrable skills essential for life both in and out of school, such as teamwork, leadership, creative thinking, decision-making, and performance skills. Our lessons and extra-curricular opportunities ensure all our children create, play, perform, and enjoy music both in class and as part of an audience.
