Subject Philosophy: PSHE

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education is an important part of the children’s learning and development here at Queen’s Park, empowering children to make sense of the wider world around them. Our intention is that when children leave Queen’s Park, they do so with a deep and meaningful understanding of their wider world that, along with their keen awareness of emotions, allows them to play an active, positive, and successful role in today’s diverse communities. As a subject, PSHE is closely linked to our school’s vision and ethos, underpins the way we approach each other, and is skilfully woven into all areas of the curriculum by all members of the school community.

In an ever-changing world that grows and develops each day, so do the needs of the children to be aware, at an appropriate level, of different factors that affect their relationships, their emotions, and their viewpoints. Through PSHE, we actively promote, enable, and encourage the children to explore these different factors so that they learn how best to deal with these alongside promoting their own mental health and well-being.

At Queen’s Park, we provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum that we believe offers a rich and engaging way to acquire the knowledge and skills the children need to prepare them to be a global citizen who:

• Understands and empathises with the people around them.
• Respects and is considerate of other peoples’ views.
• Can articulate their ideas in a thoughtful way.

In addition to this, our curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development of all children as well as promoting their understanding and appreciation of the British Values. Our Relationships and Sex Education lessons help children learn how to be safe and to understand, develop, and maintain healthy relationships both now and in their futures.
